Message In A Bottle Bath-Salts Gift Box

Bath Melts

Pamper someone special with this unique gift! The glass bottle holds your special message for the recipient, and is then later used to combine the bath salts with the essential oil of your choice to create a luxurious bath soak. This gift box is simple and relatively inexpensive to make, and is a fun way to share the benefits of essential oils with others.

Materials Needed:

  1. Bath Salts: Many different types of salts can be used for this project. Some favorites include Epsom salts and sea salts, as well as decorative colored salts. Regular table salt can also be used. A coarse salt is recommended. The exact amount will depend on the size of your gift box. About 2 cups was used with the box in the picture.
  2. Glass Bottle: For this project, we recommend a 2 oz or 4 oz. amber glass bottle. This will be used to hold your personal message, and to mix the bath salts with essential oils.
  3. Box: Any small wood or cardboard box will work well for this project. Many larger craft stores sell unfinished wood boxes that work well. Plain cardboard boxes can also be covered and decorated.
  4. Essential Oil: These will add the aroma and the benefits of the essential oil to your bath salts! You can include one larger vial, or several 1/4 dram5/8 dram or 1 dram size vials. Some essential oils that work well in bath salts include:
  • For a more relaxing bath salt, try lavender, chamomile, geranium, clary sage, or sandalwood.
  • For a more invigorating bath salt, try cypress, fir, juniper, lemon, nutmeg, orange, grapefruit or peppermint.
  • For a more romantic bath salt, try rose, jasmine, clary sage, geranium, rosewood, or ylang ylang.

  1. Finish or decorate your box as desired.
  2. Fill the box 1/2 to 3/4 of the way full with your desired bath salt.
  3. Write or print your personal message on a nice piece of paper (1/4 or 1/2 sheet of paper works well). Roll the paper into a narrow tube. If the tube is shorter than the bottle, use a piece of string, twine, or ribbon to tie it closed. If it is longer than the tube, you do not need to tie it. Insert the paper with your message into the bottle. Place the bottle with the message into your gift box with the salt.
  4. Place the vial of essential oil into the gift box with the bath salts and bottle.
  5. Close the box and carefully deliver to the recipient!
  6. To use the bath salts, scoop salts into the bottle until it is about 2/3 of the way full. Add 2-3 drops of essential oil. Cover or cap the opening of the glass bottle and shake for a few seconds to blend the essential oil into the salts. Pour the salts into running warm bath water as it fills the tub. After the salts have dissolved in the water, climb into the bath and enjoy!

Extra Ideas

  1. Include several different vials of essential oils or blends so the recipient can experience different types of baths.
  2. Mix a drop each of yellow and red food coloring into your bath salts before placing in the box to give it a sandy color.
