Within one month after her birth in Auckland, New Zealand, Abby Bean began exhibiting symptoms of a serious respiratory infection. Efforts to control and relieve the problem by Abby's doctors were fruitless. At 18 months of age, her parents, Robert and Sue decided to move from Auckland to Adelaide, South Australia, hoping the dry climate there would help.
